These photos display a particularly interesting aspect of the landscape associated with the geology. I'm always in awe realizing how fleeting our own species is in relationship to when the interesting geology formed. We seem like mere visitors on this Earth, yet act like we OWN it!

Erosion of this granite rock results in interesting shapes in Joshua Tree National Park, southern California.

  • "Organ Pipe" formation in Chiricahua National Monument, Arizona.
  • A boulder balanced on underlying eroded strata at Chiricahua National Monument in southeastern Arizona, near Wilcox.
  • Hoodoos at Chiricahua National Monument preserves the remains of an immense volcanic eruption that shook the region 27 million years ago. It eventually laid down two thousand feet of ash and pumice, highly silicious in nature. This eventually hardened into rhyolitic tuff, and eroded into the natural features visible at the monument today.
